I had to face a hard fact recently. I’m out of shape. So I began a quest to find a fitness machine that was the right fit for my workout needs (specifically a cardio unit that was gentle on the knees). I tried three other ellipticals before settling on the SE7i from Nordictrack. Truth be told, it was the first one I considered, but I was scared away by the price ($1300) on their website as well as the delivery fee (an extra $200). Thankfully, Amazon had my back with a much more reasonable price tag of around $1000 with an in-home delivery fee of $20 bucks. So with a near $500 savings, I got after it.
Side note: the shipping package weighs in at over 200lbs. I *strongly* suggest paying the extra $20 for inside the home delivery from Amazon. The guys who brought mine in were super helpful and put it exactly where I wanted it.
*What I liked*:
This workout machine arrived almost completely constructed. I only had to attach the feet, then put the arm/control stalk upright. All-in-all it took about 15 minutes to be up and running (literally). The other two machines I built before this (a Nautilus E616 and a Bodychamp BRM3671) took about 45 minutes each to put together (the other one I tried was at a friend's house).
The portability of this elliptical trainer is pretty good considering its size (and it is HUGE). It’s heavy, but you can lift it from either end and scoot it around on wheels fairly easily after the initial lift.
The upright storage mode is a roomsaver. It really does dominate the room it’s in when fully extended. Putting it upright helps free up a ton of floor space and makes the room a lot more navigable.
The workout on this thing is great! It is by far the smoothest and most natural leg motion of any of the four I tried. The base resistance is also a little bit higher. This can be a mixed bag, as if you’re not used to an elliptical workout (or just super out of shape like me), it will kick your butt. In that case you have no recourse but to keep working out until your body has adjusted.
The controls are simple and easy to use. You can use the iFit service if you like to provide varied and instructor-driven workouts, but I usually game while I workout so I don’t use that service.
The padded foot rests are actually nice. I can feel them flex against the pressure changes as I put my weight on different parts of my feet. By far the most comfortable foot rests of the four ellipticals.
*What I didn't like*:
The biggest problem with this trainer is that there is a soft requirement to use the iFit service. In fact, they want you to activate it using the service before you even try it. This would be a non-starter for me except that simply holding down the bluetooth button for 10 seconds bypasses that. I did this right away and was working out 10 seconds later.
The heart rate monitor built into the fixed handlebars is wildly inaccurate. I wore both a fitbit and Apple Watch to test it and they were both consistently within about 3-4 beats of one another (often identical). The monitor on the machine is wacky. It showed an HR of like 56 (mid workout) one second then 130 the next (I was in the mid 140s according to my smart devices). I wouldn’t rely on it personally (but then again, I don’t. I use my Apple Watch to track my workouts).
*The Bottom Line:*
I was turned off initially by the price and a lot of people complaining about the iFit service requirement but I’m really happy I ended up getting this elliptical. It’s a fantastic workout and when I’m done I can just lift it up to open up the room again. Considering how easy it was to bypass iFit, I won’t count that against it like so many others. Five stars out of five for the first serious fitness machine I’ve ever owned. I would definitely order this again.

1) ITS BIG. Bigger than it looks in the pictures. It definitely dominates a room when it is open, and closing it is a two person job that still leaves with with a big thing in the room. So it is not going to disappear.
2) Its HEAVY. This thing is really solidly built and putting it together is not very complicated, but it is a two person job.
I got it up and running and took it for a spin. The 24 built in workouts are pretty inflexible, you can't really program it at all. You can run it manually, I have used 1-4, since they are limited to 30 minutes, and thats all the hamster time I want to put in in the morning. They do a nice job of alternating sweaty resistance with easier striding. If I kept the rate up, I could get into my target heart zone for most of the workout.
BUT, the pulse monitor flat out doesn't work. It is erratic and inaccurate. I have an apple watch, so I am using a little watch app called Zone which does the trick. But this pulse monitor is not working.
The thing seems pretty damned solid. Not as solid as a gym machine, it does rock back and forth a bit. But keeping in mind how big I am I am satisfied with that.
Otherwise, it does what its supposed to do, and I feel confident that I will get a few good years of workouts out of it.
