This is the new and improved version (released on 2013) of the popular schiwinn 430 (2007). For last 7 years, Schwinn 430 was considered to be one of the best elliptical trainers for home gyms. The newer version also comes with a lot of bells and whistle to maintain its position for a long time.
We are seeing a trend in Schwinn, to make all the new elliptical in black. This 430, comes with SchwinnConnect. We connected schwinnCOnnect with MyFitnessPal in matter of seconds (it only needs a small USB flash drive).
Features:
- 20″ Precision Path™ Stride
- 22 programs (9 pre-set, 8 heart rate, 5 others)
- 20 levels of eddy current brake resistance
- Contact grip Heart rate sensor
- Manual Incline (10 degree ramp range with 6 positions)
- 2 User profile
- Dimension: 70.1″ L x 28.2″ W x 63.2″ H (178.1 x 71.5 x 160.5 cm)
- Fan, Media Tray, Dual speaker (acoustic chamber),
- USB Connection (USB charging and data export to Schwinn Connect™ & myfitnesspal.com)
Build Quality
Build Quality on this unit is excellent. If you have used premium gym quality elliptical; you will see this trainer matches that comfort level. Its quite, smooth and feels expensive (Nothing like any budget ellipticals). We have tested this with some heavy users; everything was smooth. If you are over 220 lbs and working very hard; you will notice some level of “movements”.
Assembly
Setup is very simple. If you sort all the parts properly, read the manual before digging in the assembly, you should setup this unit under 1:30 hour. All the moving parts comes with grease; so be careful not to stain your carpet or cloths. Use a spare piece of fabric while handling them.
Note: Sometime they don’t ship the manual with the box; please download it from here.
Heart Rate Monitor
We were really disappointed to find there is no wireless chest strip for this trainer. It only has contact heart rate (CHR) sensors on the stationary handlebars. To use it, you need to put your hands comfortable around the sensors. If you are not moving, its pretty accurate. But as we have tried it while working on “fun ride” program; we found it 5-10 point lower than polar wireless HRM.
It does have target heart rate control programs, but with an inefficient HRS (heart rate sensor); this programs effectiveness is questionable.
Display
The 430 has Dual track two LCD window system allows you to monitor up to 13 different display feedbacks. Upper display LCD screen shows: Programs, intensity , heart rate zone, goal, User profile and Achievement.
Lower LCD display shows: Speed, Time, Distance, current resistance levels, RPM, Heart rate and calories burned.
The console is quite big and easy to use. It has 2 big speakers, which produce better sound than previous version. A fan is placed in the bottom of the console which runs in 3 levels. There are also 3 achievement indicator lights in the console. All the buttons are easy to use and self-explanatory.
Programs
It features 22 programs to keep user engaged yet put new challenges for a long time. There are only 2 user profiles (and a guest profile); means you can share this with your partners.
There are 9 pre-set programs:
There are 8 heart rate training programs (4 beginners and 4 advanced). As this heart rate programs are entirely based on their slightly inefficient grip HRS, we suggest not using them. There are 2 custom user defined; 2 fitness tests (1 Beginner; 1 Advanced) and 1 quick start workout program.
It comes with SchwinnConnect & MyFitnessPal and USB port, so you can customize your custom program and take your workout experience to another level.
Warranty
This trainer comes with 10 years warranty on for frame, 2 years for mechanical and 1 year for electrical. Previous version of this 430, are still working in a lot of home gyms after 7 years of intensive workout. So, we can assure you this trainer is built to last. 2 years on mechanical and 1 year on electrical seems a little short.
Conclusion
There aren’t a lot of elliptical trainers in this price range that comes with so many features. For saving money we can consider the manual incline. If it only came with a wireless HRS, this trainer would be perfect!
